Flashes and Floaters
Floaters and flashes are common eye conditions that can be annoying but are usually harmless. However, they can sometimes be a sign of a more serious eye problem, such as a retinal tear or detachment.
The eye contains a clear gel, called the vitreous, that liquifies as we get older. Floaters and flashes may occur as the vitreous is liquifying over time. However, flashes and floaters may also suddenly occur if the vitreous separates and causes a tear or detachment in the retina.
If you have new onset floaters and flashes, you should see an eye doctor right away.
